His fingers pause, but his hand stays where it is, eyes falling to their plates before roaming up to meet Cap's. There's concern in his eyes, worried Steve might want out before they've even begun. His chest constricts but he finds himself shaking his head, gently pushing his fingers through Steve's hair one last time before giving his full attention back to his meal.

"No. Go now," he urges, taking a few bites of pancake in case whatever Steve says make him lose his appetite. He tries to tell himself he's being dramatic, that things will all work out. But it's hard when out of the whole world, Captain America picked you to hang out with. He's scared to put Steve on any sort of restriction or hard and fast rule, trying to just take comfort in the haphazard moments he's here. But it's hard sometimes, for someone who thrives on order and consistency.
