Though he knew it would be a loaded question, he still wasn't prepared for the gravity of the answer. He'd been doing his own searched, on the down-low. On the dark net, and anywhere else S.H.I.E.L.D. or Nat couldn't gain access. Tony closes the book and sets it on his knee. If Steve wants to show him the rest, he will.
"You know, Cap..." His own expression grows a little grim, looking down at his feet on the tile. A part of him just wants to let Bucky run the way he's been running. Destroy HYDRA, probably destroy himself. He could live with that, but he couldn't live with what it did to Steve. His heart constricts, and it takes him almost a full second to stop listening for the whirring sound alongside it. "You've taught me a lot about trust. And other stuff, too. But."
He had never outright trusted anyone without some display or research that said he should. Steve had been the exception to that, and ever since he had trusted in his word, too. His friends. Natashalie and Sam were good people, they weren't trying to take him away from Tony. They understood the familial connection more than anyone else, in fact. His fingers trace idly over the cover of the sketchpad, blowing out a sigh.
"We're gonna find him, all of us. As long as we trust... trust that he's still in there. Everything will be okay." He knows it's too simple; that it won't go down exactly that way. Not for the first time, he puts himself in Cap's shoes and it's not a pretty place to be. Not that his are any sweeter.
"I'd be doing exactly what you're doing, if it were Rhodey..." He knows his buddy, just like Bucky, would want Tony to kill him if he couldn't do the task himself. Would want to end it and all the hurt he'd wrought, no matter how haplessly. But Tony knows, just like Steve, that he'd never allow it. "We have to trust in him. We have to." His voice picks up a little roughness, sounding almost desperate as he repeats the affirmation. He trusts Bucky as an extension of Steve. And as long as they're on this path Tony isn't going anywhere, no matter how painful it is for him.
