He was never this awkward or unsure; it takes her aback, and for a moment she feels like the proverbial deer in the headlights, frozen and uncertain how to proceed. His tentativeness is only enhancing her own, and she tries to push some hair behind her ear in a nervous gesture -- except her hair's pulled back into a ponytail. She aborts the movement at her ear, awkwardly moving her hand to smooth back the dangling tail instead.
